For people who weren't there on the day, I shall add my understanding
of the problem: 

It's a Mandrake box. Dick has a new digital camera. When he plugs it
into the USB port, something should appear on the desktop in KDE 
(and I presume Gnome, but he was using KDE) to indicate that it's
there. It doesn't.
