The fact that a device exists in /dev doesn't mean the OS knows how to
map between the device file and the actual physical device.

Which kernel are you running? If it's a standard debian kernel, have you
got the parport module inserted? Is there anything in /var/log/syslog or
dmesg that says that the OS detected the parallel port or anything?
