My money would be on your caddies Rhys.  A friend of mine has a very
similar setup.  Sometimes the contacts get dirty.  A drop of WD40 on the
contacts, pull the drives in and out a couple of times and you're
sorted.

I've seen a similar phenomenon with laptop PCMCIA cards too.  One mate I
work with spent over half an hour trying to get a stubborn laptop to
recognise a PCMCIA modem (telephone support).  In desperation he got the
customer to pull the card all the way out, not just in and out of the
socket.  Lo and behold the damn thing brought a lump of fluff out with
it that was wedged on the connector!

It's not always the software (even if the software is Winblows!)
