with regards to usb dvd, the best £30 i spent this year was a usb
to ide connector (with psu) from maplins. It can be used with hard
drives or disk drives no problem and appears at sda1 as one would
expect.
I also have a harddrive split in to 2 partitions, which boots via usb
thanks to the new bios'.

my dvd drive is a lite-on which works fine with growisofs and i use
this to backup and store data. I boot to knoppix and use k3b.

with regards to dvd drives, i have seen that dual layer 9g drives are
below the £100 mark.

I have used banks of laCie drives in the past, and they are very
reliable, but very needlessly expencive byte for byte.
