Thanks Dick,
Afer some research I configured the httpd.conf to turn on the logging at the
highest level.
Restarting apache creates the new error log file but it is empty, never mind
how many errors I make.
It does seem that mod_rewite isn't switched on but the entry to load it is in
httpd.conf
ARGH!!!
