Most xorg installs I have seen link xorg.conf to xf86config....

With Init 5, CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE will kill X but it will respawn - other then 
ALT-F2 (Gnome/KDE specific unfortuantely) I'd normally

CONTROL-ALT-F1 to get to a text console
login as root
init 3 (to get rid of X ) though for some things I'd go down to single user 
mode (init 1)

use either pico, nano, joe or vi to edit the file and then init 5
