I am a UKUUG member - and have been for a few years. Individual
membership costs a little over 40quid pa. They strike me as a
friendly and useful organisation. I think there are about 700
members.

I am a regular delegate at the annual UKUUG winter conference
(the not-so-Linux conference :) . Plus they organise a few other
talks and tutorials around the year (e.g. exim, dns, xml), which
are not in this area, nor are inexpensive, so they rarely appeal
enough to me.

Other benefits include a lot of book discounts (e.g. >25% for
O'Reilly), and the quarterly newsletter (largely comprising book
reviews, and event feedback). There are several other benefits,
including mailing lists (pretty quiet, really). All on the web
site.

You are, of course, supporting a long-standing and experienced
organisation that is promoting Open Systems within the UK. So
that's an indirect benefit from the Linux perspective (above the
fact that they organise this annual Linux Dev Conf each year).

On that note, I've not been to the UKUUG Linux Dev Conf before,
but will be this year - so I look forward to meeting y'all there.
