Hi Marcus,

I have posted to mandrake expert but the response was disappointing. 
Two responses seemed to ignore the fault report and focused on SATA.
Another got the message that the problem occurred with both IDE and SATA but 
could only suggest 'be careful selecting between master/slave links on the 
hardrive (okay maybe there was a bit more than that but that was the gist of 
the advice).  I think that if I want help from Mandriva, I'll have to pay.
I'll try the newbie link and maybe 'linux questions' too.

I'm tempted to try one of the live CD distros. I have posted to Linuxmedia for 
advice on something suitable. 

Also, I have tried some of the local computer outlets in Newport and my 
experience has been (like Hugh Morris - see mailing list, 'Self-built Linux 
Computer')  that they are simply not interested - Windows rules on the High 
Street.
