This is a devilishly easy thing to do. It's worth noting that you can 
squish Linux into just about any sized hard drive that's been around for 
the past 10 years, so you wouldn't have to shell out for a new one to 
get to grips, just pinch one out of a knackered PC. My first Linux box 
(2002) had a 3Gb drive in it that I picked up in 1997. I also have a 
minimal Ubuntu booting off a 512Mb Compact Flash card =)
