yes :)

i just make do with something like "tar cvzf $USER.tar.gz $HOME",
extract it's contents somewhere else and copy things over as and when
necessary.  usually tell it to omit things like tmp, ~, core, mp3, mpg
files, etc

however, i'm sure people will suggest tar over ssh, rsync, gzip, cvs,
etc, for backing up home dirs :)  I tend to periodically backup to a
rewritable disc.
