Hit the 'f' key - that should make it full screen.

If it doesn't, and you see the black frame again, it probably means you
have a problem with your video setup. I know that when I tried out
compiz a few months ago, mplayer would not go to full screen - just the
black frame thing.

Stopped using compiz and returned to my usual window manager (metacity)
and all was well again. I think it is an issue with some of the Intel
video drivers.
