Reliability being just one factor. A significant benefit of Software RAID
over hardware RAID is the ability to (for example) yank a disk from one
Linux box and slap it in any other Linux box (subject to supported
controller/filsystem).
In the event for example of a RAID1 pair going south, you can take the good
disk out and put it in another machine, same goes for if the mobo goes pop.
With hardware RAID you generally need to put the disk in a machine which has
the same controller (and in many cases) running the same firmware/microcode
as the original.
