[SWLUG] Any problems if I put in second network card?

Hi Folks,

I have a machine where the network cable is actually plugged into the 
mother board via a little metal box,
It is clearly malfunctioning. I have swapped cables and even tried it 
under Windows. It does not connect.
I am thinking of sticking a  proper network card into the machine.

Can anyone foresee any problems?

How do I persuade linux to ignore the old connection? Will it be ignored 
anyway as it does not work?
