I have a 701 with 4GB SSD and 512MB RAM. Runs Ubuntu Netbook Edition
(UNE) OK. UNE is full Ubuntu with (optional) desktop for Netbooks. 

4GB SSD is limited. I didn't have enough space to do a dist-upgrade from
Karmic to Lucid so I had to do a fresh install.  I have a 4GB SD card
for extra storage of documents, etc.

There are some programs which don't work well with a 7" screen, but
Firefox is OK (with liberal use of the F11 key for Full Screen).
