indeed, although it turns out i didn't wait long enough!, 10 mins and it does 
boot:) 
the point is that a native version of win10 should boot if i turn off smt in 
the uefi, it's a hardware configuration change, not a change of hardware.
so it seems reasonable to assume that the same would be true of a change in 
the vm 'hardware configuration' assuming that i am changing the xml file (i 
use libvirt) correctly
