[Swlug] External hard drive

Hi all,
I have an idea my laptop is feeling the strain a bit, and I should like to get an external hard drive to back up all my data before something bad happens.
I have a Sandisk SSD and a Samsung SSD, but cannot get the laptop HP elitebook running Mint Mate (Caja 1.12.7) to recognise either of them. I'd appreciate some help with this please, and advice on what external hard drive is best to back up important data. Looking at at least 1Tb.
