[Swlug] What's causing this system freeze and is it fixable?

I'm running Mint Cinnamon.

The system will randomly freeze. It's up most of the time even if it's hibernating. I'm running on an Asus e203ma laptop.
I did get an error message today - "cinnamon settings daemon - power not responding".
Aside from the normal stock Linux I have Skype in the background. I had Chromium with 4 tabs open and Firefox with The Weather Channel is what I had just pulled up when it all froze.
I have 28.4GB of 64GB available on my SSD so the system should not be choked.
