Hi Alan,
I think you must have 'digest mode' enabled in your user options for the mailing list.
You can switch this option off, which will then deliver each email to you separately.
You can log in here: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/options/swlug
If you haven't ever set a password, or if you don't know it, you can reset it here too.
In case it helps, I have uploaded a small screenshot indicating the digest option here:

Your story triggered a memory of mine from 19 years ago, where I thought I'd attend Debian's 10th Birthday Party in Cambridge: (https://www.debian.org/News/2003/20030811 and https://wiki.earth.li/Debian10thBirthday) I had been a keen user of Debian for a couple of years already - since Debian 2.2 'Potato' https://www.debian.org/releases/potato/ and felt I'd like to join the Birthday party to show my support and meet some people involved in the movement. I got to the pub at the appointed time, but basically panicked and bolted with barely a word spoken to anybody. What was I *thinking* I asked myself. I'm not a Debian *Developer* nor a package maintainer, just a *fan*, a mere *user*. I felt I hadn't got the right t-shirt, the right educational nor career background. So I got back on my unicycle and high-tailed it out of there, sharpish, back to more familiar pastures.
These days I like to think that I'd probabaly be a little more tenacious in the same circumstances, but who knows?
Hopefully we'll have the chance to meet at another SWLUG meetup soon - If I'm there you'll probably be able to recognise me by my unicycle.
Kind regards,
Ben

The driver will key it in and and email will pop up telling me its been delivered. That's in seconds or minutes i.e it is quick. That is what I normally experience and suggests I do not have a system problem.

I had a good look outside first, then wandered around inside. No sign of anyone so I got myself a drink and sat down. About 15mins later I move outside on the church side as the interior was a bit humid. I was going to have a bite to eat, but could not book the table where I sat. There was no desperate need so I decided to make my way home.
