Popularity does not mean it's reliable or even secure - look at Windows. Naomi Brockwell has plenty to say about Google and Chrome/ium. 

On my Linux Mint system it seems to be behind all the system freezes. Once I manage to get the cursor off the Chrome window and close Chrome, the system goes back to working like normal. It does seem to leave somthing behind though as the system is not quite as sparkly after stopping Chrome. It picks up after a system reboot.
