[Swlug] HP netbook and SIM card

Hello. Long-time caller, first-time listener.

Wondering whether there's any reliable source for fairly general advice on
getting the SIM card operational on a HP netbook of approximately 2013
vintage? I haven't delved into drivers too much because I'm wondering if
it's simply a button to press on an interface instead (WLAN0 did appear
fleetingly in Network settings but I'm beginning to think it was just a
mirage).

Currently running Ubuntu 22.04 LTS but can switch distros if needed.
Netbook (or maybe in marketing terms a smaller-screen laptop) is a HP
Elitebook 820 G3.
