Hello Paul,
Welcome to SWLUG. My connections to LUG are fairly recent, but I notice quite a few parallels in our backgrounds. I date back to a time before printed circuits. My intro to electronics was a humble crystal set. Formal training was with valves and the earliest transistors so I've followed all the developments.
I built my first computer from a kit. That Acorn Atom was fully expanded, on the board, to, if memory serves, 12k of ram. These days my desk machine has about 8Gb. I still build most of my own stuff.
In the early 80's I was with one of the raft of small software houses so I handled most of the small computers of the time. Around 1990 I studied software engineering with MS DOS on 80286's and, in the way of life, went to work for a video post production company.
Linux has never been part of my formal working life, but I've used it heavily since the 1990's. While I have used several variants my normal distribution is Debian Stable.
Kindest Regards
Alan Gray
