[Swlug] Getting SIM card slot operational

Hello there. I asked this question a while ago to no response, so
here's another roll of the dice...

Wondering whether there's any reliable source for fairly general
advice on getting the SIM card operational on a HP netbook of
approximately 2013 vintage? I haven't delved into drivers too much
because I'm wondering if it's simply a button to press on an interface
instead (WLAN0 did appear fleetingly in Network settings but I'm
beginning to think it was just a mirage).

Currently running Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS but can switch version and/or
distros if needed. The netbook (or maybe in marketing terms a
smaller-screen laptop) is a HP Elitebook 820 G3.
