[Swlug] Mysterious errors

Linux Mint started behaving oddly. Chromium would not start despite repeated clicks. Then I could not get the system update in the tray to do anything other than show me the updates needed. 
I restarted and got the following display but can't seem to work around it to get the system to restart. Each time I do a power on restart it comes back. How do I fix this?
