smartctl won't deal with MMC (so SD cards etc).  If you're running your 
OS off an SD card it's going to hammer it a bit.

In Debian there's something called mmc-utils, which has a program called 
mmc, which can check the status of your SD card.  Probably a similar 
package for whatever your distro is.
