I was quite excited about hearing a noise from the speaker. It's very faint but I think James is spot on about it being EMF from the overhead power line.

I should be receiving my 10M resistors this weekend. I'll put the circuit on a small piece of stripboard and see if eliminating the long wires helps. My boost converters won't arrive for a week or so but I can string 3x9v batteries together for 27v.

I'll be working on this tomorrow, if the resistors arrive on time.
