Hi Ian,

Know I'm late to the party on this today but thought I'd write in with
my solution for fonts.

Most systems will load fonts located under either of the following
directories (under your Home directory):

* ~/.fonts/ -- the "traditional" place for per-user fonts.
* ~/.local/share/fonts -- the more modern way, respecting the XDG Free
Desktop protocol.

I prefer the XDG location as this keeps my home directory a bit tidier.

In either case, you shouldn't need to faff about with permissions since
it's under your own Home directory. I've also not needed to reload the
font cache at all; I just close and reopen the software I'm using
(Libreoffice, Inkscape etc) and the font appears. My LaTeX distribution
also respects this and finds fonts no problem.

I've had this work on Xubuntu in the past, and it still works for me in
Devuan now.

If you only need the fonts installed for a single user (yourself), then
this might save you hassle in the future.

All the best,
Matt
