[Watford] Lug Update

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the tips. I will certainly check them out. Especially the
lunches.  And I have to say, being a Linux novice, I have not tried Gentoo;
actually I had no idea it existed. As soon as I get some time I'll check it
out.

Thanks again, for your help.

Walter

Hi Walter,

Welcome to the group.

I've done some good general unix courses with Learning Tree in London that I
can recommend. The lunches are great there too.

If you were learning Linux in order to get a job I'd say go for Suse in
Europe and see if you can become Novell certified. Redhat is bigger in
America with the RHCE being a kind of MCSE equivalent. But as you are just
in it for the learning I'd probably do as Mark suggests and search the
internet until your eyes bleed.

And now for the predictable part..

Tried Gentoo? :)

The Gentoo site, howto and wiki are probably the greatest set of
documentation you can read.

	Hi Mark,

I recently signed up with LUG Watford having found some entries on
the web.

I have spent the last 10 years installing and maintaining Windows
Systems
and I am getting very bored with it now. As I am about to semi
retire my
project is to get the hang of Unix/Linux.

Can you recommend any courses, preferably via internet/email so I
can get
instructions and advise on building Kernels and hardware
troubleshooting.
What I have found on the Web is good but it never quite goes deep
enough or
I often just don't understand the instructions / jargon. I have
looked at
LFS but even that throw up a lot of questions.

I have managed to install several versions of Linux, from Red Hat to
Debian
but something almost always wont work correctly, usually to do with
a
hardware device and when I get the driver and try compile it I
usually come
	unstuck.

	Many thanks, Walter Jaggli
