I can recommend either dsl (damn small linux) http://damnsmalllinux.org/
or puppy Linux for old laptops
http://www.puppylinux.org/user/viewpage.php?page_id=1.
I resurrected an old Dell back from the dead with Puppy Linux. Do you
have a floppy drive on the machine? That should be all you need to get
a network install and as Puppy Linux is so slimline you should get a
workable system pretty quickly on a fast network connection. As
another suggestion: If the XP on there is still just about alive - try
copying a linux boot image from a portable drive - Damn small Linux
comes in at 50Mb so that should work on even the most ancient machine.
There are is also GNU Parted that may help with getting partitions set
up - http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/index.shtml.
I have a portable CD rom drive somewhere in my pile of junk - If you
want to bring the laptop to the next meeting I can bring it.
http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/toshiba.html <--- This is a good resource too.
