Thanks Alain, though trying to change my passwd resulted in:

$ passwd
Changing password for david
Old password:
Enter the new password
Please use a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers.
Enter new password:
Re-enter new password:
passwd: Cannot change ID to root.

has this something to do with "I have modified /opt/etc/openssh/ 
sshd_config to forbid root logins."?
so I thought maybe running 'sudo passwd' but this came back with:

Changing password for root

aarrgh! Never fear, I made sure:

Passwords do not match.
passwd: The password for root is unchanged.

So I guess I'll stick with what you text'd me...?
