The machine was running MS-XP. I kind of worked y/day, booting a Linux rescue disk
until (I suppose) too much memory was used when it died with a kernel backtrace.
I was able to see the disk with fdisk.
It failed a memory test.
Today fails to even start.

So: I think that the disk is fine, I need something with an ATA-5 interface
that I can plug into.
