Argh, the bad blocks strike:
    # cat /opt/etc/init.d/S10xinetd  
    cat: /opt/etc/init.d/S10xinetd: Input/output error

Thus no xinetd, which it seems is configured to listen for rsync.

No time to do anything else right now myself.  It does look like the
flash might need replacing. :(  Suggest it be brought along to a meeting
if someone can manage that.
