I have 4GiB now - in my 10 y/old machine - I need more since:

* firefox is often at 1.5GiB+
* OoO 700M
* Opera 700M
* Virtual machines: 512M (older ones), 768M (newer ones)

OK: the above are virtual sizes, resident often lower.

I am currently running at ~5.5G and only have one (old) VM running.
