All,

The following is from the Rugby Lug. If there are any others who wish
to run a Software Freedom Day event and would like to benefit from the
Rugby Lug experience, please reply as soon as possible to discuss.

The SFD is very useful to anyone who wishes to attract the attention
of their local government, MP's, schools and businesses and generally
increase the profile of proprietary alternates.

In previous years, Rugby Lug have surveyed visitors at the SFD to find
out what they want from it and how it could be improved, the local MP
has brought the press and in turn become better educated in the
subjects.

Many of the visitors are home users, but these generally work
somewhere or are IT influencers who further advocate Open Source and
Standards and add to the adoption and market value.

Hey everyone,

At Monday's June LUG meetup we discussed the fact that Software
Freedom Day 2013 is just over 3 months away (that's 126 days) and
whether the group is interested in putting together another event this
year.

The reaction was (unsurprisingly!) positive, so this email is to try
and reach everyone who might be interested in helping to organise an
event this year. Please forward to others if you think they may be
interested too.

Registration for this year's event has only opened (today) on the
official SFD website [1]

  [1] http://softwarefreedomday.org/

and, as in previous years, there is the chance to grab some SFD swag
if registering early.

Having run successful events for two years, we have accumulated a fair
amount of know-how and physical assets, but the following points need
to discussed early in the planning stage:

- A benevolent dictator to oversee the event's planning (I've ruled
myself out this year...)

- Volunteers for the planning committee (...but can help here!)

- Location

- Activities we want to have on offer

- Raising awareness / local press

- Getting even more schools/parents/children on board this year

- Sponsorship

- Open Source Consortium involvement

Any and all comments are welcome (please use the mailing list for
discussion). We have three scheduled LUG meets before the event which
we could use to discuss the event and planning details as required:

 - Monday 8th July
 - Monday 12th August
 - Monday 9th September

If there's enough enthusiasm to run another event this year, we should
look to have an initial planning meeting soon to 'test the waters' and
get all interested parties together.

Thanks for your interest, and for your comments,
Nick
