I wonder if anyone can give me a nudge in the right direction with another
small (Mandrake 9) Linux problem.

I have a 56K modem installed on Com4 which Windows recognises as a "Generic
56K Fax modem". Linux Control Panel does not recognise a modem under
tty3/Com4 but does under tty1/Com2 - a not uncommon confusion in early
Windows too. However, it is clearly not recognising it fully. The
"Initialising Modem" freezes, and the Query Modem command goes through the
motions, but returns nothing. Similarly under the Terminal it is not even
possible to type in ATZ, let alone get an OK.

Any ideas?
