(This will go through OK to the Menai and Northwales LUGS. Can moderators of
the other lists please consider posting it on their list, since it may be of
interest to CS students elsewhere in Wales.)

Just a note to say that the Apertium translation platform, which the
Welsh-English and (forthcoming) Breton-French translators are built on, has
been accepted as a Google Summer of Code 2009 project:
http://socghop.appspot.com/program/accepted_orgs/google/gsoc2009

If any students would like to consider working on developing the platform over
the Summer of 2009, please have a look at the list of possible projects:
http://wiki.apertium.org/wiki/Ideas_for_Google_Summer_of_Code
and get in touch.

Apertium is one of the few translation systems where both code *AND* data are
available under the GPL. 17 language pairs have already been published, and
about a dozen more are under development. It is a very worthwhile project
for minority languages. For more info on apertium-cy, the Welsh-English
translator, there is an introductory paper here:
http://ufal.mff.cuni.cz/pbml-91-100.html
and more detailed information is available on the project wiki:
http://wiki.apertium.org/wiki/Main_Page
or on the IRC channel:
