I've never noticed any disadvantages of splitting the files (apart from
more files on the disk, so it looks a bit more "messy").
I have however regretted not splitting the files when they grew over 2Gb
and I wanted to copy them over to a shared FAT32 partition when I started
running out of space and couldnt :-( Since then, I always split.

Yes, seems to work ok for me. Where I work, they are just getting into
virtualization for dev/test kit and the (apparantly) have a beast of a
server that will run something silly like 40 VM's - all Windows. I'm not
sure what the base OS is in this case, whether it is Windows or Linux.
