Thanks I have a few good suggestions. 

As I said, my friend is a newbie with Linux but has software experience - he does application programming in a client/server environment in Java and would like to know more.

I shall suggest that he join his local LUG group and post particular questions there or research using the Internet.

I surprised that I had so few replies but given the Novell/Microsoft issues over SUSe perhaps not that surprised. 

How does OpenSUSe deal with the Mono/Moonlight issues. I note that Ubuntu are looking to add Mono and Moonlight to the mix which annoys me as I would rather the distribution kept clear of such blatant patent traps.
