It's not all bad news. My daughter, currently at Bournemouth Uni is expected
to provide work for assessment in Open Office format.

When I live in Somerset, I offered to add an OpenOffice module to
teaching given by the local college, to older members, but my offer
was declined. The response was along the lines of
---
We understand what you are saying, but Microsoft gives us Office for
free, so that is what we are told to teach.
---
Go figure that one out.
My concern was that I was installing 2nd hand computers, mainly for
first time older users, very cheaply, who were then finding that they
'had' to go out and buy MS Office, after attending local college
instruction. This was a few years ago.
I think you hit the same barrier, by the sound of it, in that
'management', either at the college, or higher up, had decided on a
Microsoft based syllabus, and the decision was not up for discussion.
