Just a thought:
There is a free, anonomizing network proxy like thing called i2P. It is faster and more secure than TOR.
Seriously, how about we all tie into it and it might become very fast in this area. Then we can surf and email, etc. without fear. You can have it running without using it if it is slowing things down.
Very simple install instructions: http://how-to.linuxcareer.com/i2p-anonymity-for-the-masses

I2P is an anonymizing network, offering a simple layer that identity-sensitive applications can use to securely communicate. All data is wrapped with several layers of encryption, and the network is both distributed and dynamic, with no trusted parties.
Many applications are available that interface with I2P, including mail, peer-peer, IRC chat, and others
