Well done on choosing Linux!!
The first thing you notice, and this continues all the way
is that there is more than one way to do it!!
If you have a high-bandwith connection, then debian linux is
your man, if not then probably mandrake, just as you are
learning.
First thing: "HOWTOs" are your friend. They are documents
that explain how to do stuff under linux.
http://en.tldp.org/HOWTO/Installation-HOWTO/ is the
installation howto. It will explain how to install linux.
Give that a read and ask any questions here or at the LUG.
