Hm. What that means, I think, is that a file existed where no file was
expected, and so dpkg (which is actually the Debian package manager;
apt is just a handy front end) threw a wobbler when setting up a link.
update-rc.d is the thing which maintains the startup scripts in
/etc/{init,rc?}.d and that's what actually wobbled.

Try apt-get --purge remove linuxconf and then apt-get install
linuxconf.
