Ron has given you a comprehensive and excellent description :) I'll
just add that, if you're using Debian, the default MTA is exim. Now, I
don't really understand, still, how exim does what it does, but the
Debian setup walked me through getting it to send and receive mail
properly, and that's all I needed. I don't know whether other
distributions have similar configuration tools; exim lets you choose
one of five "startup configurations" (use an upstream smarthost, be a
real on-the-net mailserver, etc) and then that's all you need to do.
