ATI do seem to provide drivers for the 9500 for XFree86 
(http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html); might be worth trying them to ge 
the card up. If you then want to step back and try something from stock X then 
OK, but at least you'll have Mozilla to read documentation in ;-)
