[Wolves] MySQL System variables - changing?

Hi all,

I can list system variables in MySQL with:

  SHOW VARIABLES;

I need to change these vars in MySQL 3.23.x and:

  SET var=val;

does not work. Neither the SET GLOBAL or SET SESSION
commands in this version of MySQL. Any idea how to
change these in the client as opposed to specifying
command line args?

The MySQL manual is no use incidentally. :\
