Greetings, :-)
I would like to be a Linux advocate but I have been largely
unsuccessful at getting it to do anything for me except developing a
deep sense of frustration.
The principles are heart-warming ; a democratic operating system- of the
people, by the people, for the people. But it has run me ragged!
I won't bore you with all the trials and tribulations I have endured
since discovering Linux and reading Rebel Code nearly 3 years ago.
Instead I'll just concentrate on the latest problem and calmly ask for
>:o Help!!!!!!!!!!!
The topography:-
I have two computers sharing a cable broadband modem through a netgear
router. One computer is an 6 year old P2 with windows 98 and Mandrake 7.
The other is a new P4 with Windows XP pro and Mandrake 8 (I got it for
£10 at the Linux Expo in Brum.- that's the software not the computer!).
They hum along nicely in Windows sharing files, printer and access to
the internet.
:-( The problem:-
What I would like-quite reasonably, I think- is for one or both systems
to access the internet under Linux. I have tried with the older
machine but thought I stood more chance with the newer version of
Mandrake. Nope!
=-O It's Message Time:-
On booting up I get-
unknown bridge resource 0: assuming transparent.
(When I entered this into Google, I finished up in a part of the ether
inhabited by dangerous looking men with long beards and and black T
shirts speaking a language I didn't understand. :-[ )
I have had a fiddle with the Mandrake Control Centre and discovered that
the hardware list includes my ethernet card (SiS 900) but the network
set up wizard eventually comes up with this end of term report:
ins mod'ing module sis900 failed at /usr/lib/libDrakx.modules.pm line 549
Whilst examining the entrails I also came across this message- but I
can't remember where.
lib/modules/2.4.18-6mdk/kernal/drivers/net/sis 900.0.gz: init_module: No
such device.
I have been following the mailings and I have a feeling that one of you
may be the keeper of the rosetta stone. If so could you let me have some
idea what this all means and what I can do to move on to my next
intractable problem :-) .
