Thanks Adam for your long reply. I'm off to watch some rugby in a mo. 
but I will read, mark and inwardly digest your advice.
One point before I go: I did think of using a newer version of Mandrake. 
I have downloaded and burnt Ver.9.1 BUT- my computer has USB mouse and 
keyboard and when the installation kicks in Oops- neither of them work 
so I can't proceed with the installation.. As one door closes another 
door shuts! :-(
