make sure you don't break your booting lilo or grub.  You might need to
boot into it again later ;-)

I always keep my original boot image from the install in lilo.conf

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-bf2.4
        label=Linux2.4
        read-only
        optional
        initrd=/initrd.img.old

whatever you currently have working make sure that it is still in a
working format before you start.
