It is text based, but it's a lot better than the old one, which was
basically some modified floppy installers from the good old days if I'm
reading my Debian History right ;)

http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/

You can download a recent ISO image from there.

Was this a text based installer? Or was it a GUI one?

Kat and I have played a little with Ubuntu
(http://www.no-name-yet.com) and although it's still a text based
installer, it is much improved upon the Debian one it is based upon.
The desktop is quite slick, and it seems to have some relatively
sensible defaults. Everything seems to work well (shame I had to
download the atmel-firmware package to get Kat's wireless card
working).

David.
