From my experience if a computer locks up, try pressing caps lock - if
the light on the keyboard continues to work then it's just a problem
with X - in which case trying ctrl+alt+f6 might work and take you to a
console. Otherwise, remote access from a network might help (e.g. kill
X). Failing that, a reboot is often required.
