Found this on MSN Help..

   1. Set outgoing TCP connections to port 1863 on your proxy servers.
   2. In the main MSN Messenger window, click the *Tools* menu, and then
      click *Options*.
   3. Click the *Connection* tab.

      Note the information that is required on this tab.

   4. Provide all network users with the information and instructions
      they need to properly configure the Connections tab of their MSN
      Messenger program.
   5. Make sure the internal local area network has access to the Domain
      Name System (DNS) servers to resolve the names of external hosts
      such as /messenger.msn.com/.

I use MSN with Smoothwall, and didn't need to do anything, have used it 
with Astaro also, again didn't need to do anything. If you need to, set 
up a SOCKS proxy.
